(Language Intensive) In this course students use the language arts of reading, writing, listening, and speaking to explore the historical development of childrens literature in English from its origins through the contemporary period, with an emphasis on contemporary works. While exploring how childrens literature artfully structures peoples experiences, values, and cultures, students will learn the elements of childrens literature, different genres, and current issues pertaining to childrens literature. Students will also develop presentation skills for sharing literature with children. For elementary education majors, the knowledge and appreciation of childrens literature developed in the course will serve as foundational knowledge for the Reading/Language Arts methods courses.
